A collection of “Background and Mood” music 78 RPM records. These records have no information regarding the musicians involved, just great titles and those sounds that trigger black and white flickering memories.
Also played an “Oriental” set of 78’s – These sound like the sort of mock-Arabic music one might have heard in a Middle Eastern restaurant in Omaha.

Boy Howdy as my fellow DJ Blanche Fubar would say. Our fantastic fanatic listeners have come through again. These shows are always a joy and somewhat of a difficulty to do. It’s a frantic and unique set of shows. I was and still am impressed and grateful for the people who made the effort and ponied up during this program.
What does this have to do with playlists? Well…these were done instead of, or maybe pre-occupying me enough to not write down the playlists. You know “I’ll remember these later” kind of thing.
A thank you CD was offered to all those who pledged at any amount to this program. The material was all featured on this years programs, about half the tracks are remastered 78 RPM records from my collection. Below is a track listing and info regarding them.
Thank you all very much.

01. Just The Blues

Alistair Cooke Introducing a Swing Jam Session for the BBC 11.05.38. His obvious love of the music and musicians really comes through. This sounds more like the play by play for a sporting event than for a concert.

Great Swing Jam Sessions Vol 1

Saga 6914

02. Hindustan

Bob Scoby’s Frisco Band featuring vox by Clancey Hayes. Fun, very fun.

Good Time Jazz 78 RPM

03. Blackout Boogie

Freddie Slack. Viroqua Wisconsin’s own. Who knows what they were thinking about with this.

Freddie Slack’s Boogie Woogie

Capitol 78 RPM Set

04. Unknown Ringling Bros & Barnum and Baily Sideshow Pitchman

This is a field recording from the mid 1950’s. The crowd ambience, the mildly psychotic lounge organ playing in the background. The bygone sounds of America.

American Talkers: The Art Of The Pitchman

Global Village C 306

05. Minnesota no Tamago-uri

A Japanese 78 RPM from the 1930’s. A song about a Minnesota Egg Salesman, go figure.

Victor 78

06. The Train and the River

Jimmy Giuffre Trio. Soft and sweet, listening to this feels like a refreshing breeze.

The Sound Of Jazz

Columbia CL 1098

07. Boogie Woogie On Strings

Porky Freeman. I think someone was trying to cash in with this.

78 RPM

08. Banjo Boogie

Harry Reser’s Jumping Jacks. From a set of Mood and Background film 78 RPM’s.

78 RPM

09. Destination Moon

Lester Young house party recording. Listen to this man’s soul singing. Ah Pres, thank you.

Charlie Parker Records

10. Swamp Root

Harmonica Frank Floyd. What can be said about a guy who could play two harmonicas? One with his nose.
An original, rough and unpolished diamond in the coal.

The Great Original Recordings

Puritan PUR 3003

11. Green Green Rocky Road

Alabama school children recorded in 1950. A field recording by Alan Lomax from “The Folk Box”. The fun is infectuous on this one.

Elecktra

12. Southern Whoopee Song

Anglin Brothers. Sounds like ghosts.

Mister Charlie’s Blues 1926-1938

Yazoo

13. Boogie Woogie

Honey Hill. A great unknown, desceptivly simple.

From a set of Boogie Woogie 78’s on Decca

14. Shamisen Boogie

Another Japanese 78 RPM with that wonderfully wierd, and somewhat tragic blending of cultures.

15. Moon Moods

Leslie Baxter Orchestra. Theremins in space with models wrapped in tin foil. What more could anyone want? And he was still going by Leslie.

Music Out Of Moon 78 RPM Set

16. Mood Indigo/Hot And Bothered/Creole Love Song

Duke Ellington Orchestra. An example of a recording made for the experimental new speed of 33 1/3 RPM record players introduced in the late 1920’s. These didn’t go to well at the time due to the depression and cost of the players.

Jazz From New York 1928-1932

Historical Records HLP-33

17. Little Joe From Chicago

Andy Kirk and His Clouds Of Joy featuring Mary Lou Williams. Mary Lou Williams was steady as the tide, and as smart as the world.

From a set of Boogie Woogie 78’s on Decca. The Honey Hill cut, track 13, came from the same.

On October 5, Dig Up The Roots featured a program of DADA, Futurist, and Surrealist recordings from Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, and many others.. Love them or hate them, these artistic movements of the early Twentieth century blew apart the traditional worlds of artist and audience, creating a foundation for generations of freaks and wierdos who followed. It may be a stretch to call some of these recordings music… but that’s why radio dials spin.

This program is one of those that I would choose to admit never existed; and will from this point on deny it ever occured. Here’s what happened…or what didn’t happen…or what shouldn’t have happened.
I bring a circa 1952; dual (not the company) turntable; the
Ancient Mix Master; that I play 78 RPM records on; to the radio station. This week I had plugged it into the wrong type of audio inputs of the mixer and the result was a very distorted sound on top of the already scratchy sound of the records. Not good. I’m told it sounded much worse out there than it did in there; which is hard to believe
I had to change from my plan of playing the Spade Cooley; (the bad ferral son of Cowboy Swing music) and Ella Mae Morse; the Cow Cow Boogie gal 78’s to grabbing some CD’s that were right there in the studio: Louvine Brothers and Moon Mullican I remember…there were two other artists…lost forever i’m afraid. Like a slowly retreating fog as dawn warms and stretches sort of thing. However; with help I now know the correct way to plug the Ancient Mix Master in. So I will be continuing the practice of bringing it in on occasion; what I call 78 O’clock.
But this week’s program didn’t happen. Everyone stayed asleep and had nice dreams.
