The Closer
My friend John Lovold brought in his collection of Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings. JATP was the name of a series of concerts and recordings produced by Norman Granz begining in 1944 in Los Angeles. Granz produced tours starting in 1946 that featured Swing and bop musicians playing in small groups. These were among the first high-profile performances to feature racially integrated bands, and Granz cancelled some bookings rather than have the musicians perform for segregated audiences.
Jazz at the Philharmonic featured most of the era’s preeminent musicians: Louie Bellson, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Roy Eldridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Harris, Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones, Gene Krupa, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Flip Phillips, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Willie Smith, Tommy Turk, Ben Webster, and Lester Young, among others.
For this show, we featured recordings that had been previously unreleased.

New World Records was founded in 1975. I played 10 records from their catalog today. The following is from their web site:
The company was founded with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation with a mandate to produce a 100-disc anthology of American music encompassing the broadest possible spectrum of musical genres. This set of recordings, together with their extensive liner notes, provides a core curriculum in American music and American studies. In 1978 the Anthology was completed and distributed free of charge to almost 7,000 educational and cultural institutions throughout the world. An additional 2,000 Anthologies were sold at cost to other similar institutions. Through these recordings two hundred years of music and American cultural history are brought to life.

This show spent the most part fiddlin around Middle America with The Harry Smith Anthology VOL 4 – on clear vinyl no less, and some other great collections were featured also. The remainder of the show was spent Knitting. Music of the Knitters (who were in Minneapolis that night – and a fine show it was! Mighty fine), Billy Zoom & Dave Alvin rockabilly recordings, Exene Cervenka and John Doe solo recordings. But not the stuff I left at home and realized right before the set started.

RHUMBAS, a cuban music that is percussion and vocal based. Three traditional types of Rhumbas exist: The YAMBU, a slow couples dance; The GUAGUANCO, a faster more contemporary couples dance and the COLUMBIA, a modern dance for guys to show off their dancing skills. We heard a variety of styles from the real deal to show biz glitz to guitar music from Zaire to New York City Doo-Wop Rhumba.

Early previously unreleased MOTOWN label and ‘Blue-Eyed’ and Northern Soul recordings from the U.K. circa mid 60’s. A good dose of vitamin B3 helped make us all sweat more than the weather outside.

Some selections from John Hammond’s 1938/39 recordings at Carnegie Hall focusing on the electric guitar genius of Charlie Christian; Cool Jazz sounds of THE TRIO, GETZ AU GO-GO and Miles Davis blend into Brasilian smooth styling and burning tempos of Latin Jazz artists like Machito, Mongo Santamaria etc. A fun show that did several 180 degree turns in a short time.

A small listen in on the weird America that one finds in a box, under the shelf behind that other stuff. Disney music as done by Dave Brubeck, Sun Ra and Duke Ellington, among others. A set of accordion jazz, psycho polkas and head scratching, toe tapping tunes. A large portion of this show were 78 RPM records played live on the air, another example of the ancient and future cohabitating nicely.

An In studio apperance by 3 of the 5 Clumsy Lovers from Vancouver BC. Jason Homey on mandolin and banjo, Trevor Rogers on guitar and vox, and Andrea Lewis on fiddle and vox. The following is copied from their road diary on their website: “Tuesday, July 14, 2005 — Minneapolis, MN — Started the day with an appearance on KFAI. Trevor, Jason and Andrea played acoustic versions of “Stand Up”, “Don’t Worry”, “People I’ve Been Meaning To Thank”, and DJ Greg spun a couple others off the new CD. Plus, Andrea had the greatest croissant she has ever had in her life. For real. Ever. The greatest. Greg brought in, and she’s in his debt.”

On this show, for the most part, it was the same song in different directions. Not definitive versions, but examples of how the same tune can be interpreted in vastly different ways over time, over the ocean etc. Among the source material were three hefty box sets from the 1950’s – 1960’s. The show started with the oldest known written piece of folk or secular music in English, and spun away from there.

As I was planning this show I could not make up my mind between a loose collection of records that consisted of musicians from all over the continent of Africa that had in common was their acknowledgment and love of Blues, Rock and Jazz music. But there were these early Dizzy Gillespie Latin sessions, and, well, I still couldn’t decide so played as many of both. Started with Clifford Brown discussing the origins of Night In Tunesia, the song that inspired this show.

The pioneering piano of Merrill Moore / assorted stars / Hillbilly comedy from both the Marx Brothers and Spike Jones. A good amount of the first hour of the show was from very old cassette tapes. Also, a darker side of upright, descent and moral Country music. Songs of drugs, drunk driving and the dangers of beatnik bongos.

The smooth arrangements of Eddie Sauter. Featuring his work with Mildred Baily, Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Stan Getz. The last set is a Stan Getz session from 1949, not done by Eddie Sauter, but a nice way to round out the show.
