Doc Rock brought in a stack of Western Swing.

In 1932, two young talented musicians named Milton Brown and Bob Wills were performing together in a radio band called The Light Crust Doughboys. These two would become the guiding forces of a highbred music later called Western Swing. This show featured some of the more prominent studio musicians who played with any number of touring and house bands in Texas, Oklahoma and the surrounding area of the SW. People like Roy Newman, Charles Mitchell and an ace of the 88’s: Moon Mullican.
Todays program was put together by Doc Rock, who joins me in studio once a month.

I’ve always liked Compilation records. Get the record because of one artist or song, and then, when lucky, you find those gems…
Compilation records, sampler CDs, mix-tapes. These all hold the promise of the unknown. When i first started collecting records I would seek out compilations – often buying the recording for one or two songs that I knew of, but really looking forward to the unknown.
Today’s show represents a small varied sampling of this collection. We heard early blues on Yazoo, jazzy drug songs from Stash, arcane Americana from The Library of Congress and fine examples of mid-century jazz from Columbia.

My son Joey came into the studio today. He’s really fond of Johnny Cash, so we started there…
Today on the show, we focused on Johnny Cash and his musical family. Some great recordings of June Carter Cash and the Carter family from a recent release called ‘Keep On The Sunny Side – June Carter Cash – Her Life In Music’. Joey, my son, brought in a sample of some of Mr. Cash’s later recordings that he likes: stripped down to a guitar and that craggled voice that transcends ages, like bedrock. We also featured the recent rerelease of the historic ‘Live At San Quentin’ recording that has the entire stage show, not just Johnny. In this we got to hear the Stattler Bros., Carl Perkins, June Carter and some of the surviving Carter family. Here and there were thrown in some random singers and players too.

A weird collection…maybe not weird but certainly not ‘Average’ collection of tunes that somehow reminded me of what the U.S. sounds like. Maybe.
What do lush sounding French orchestrations of Milhaud LeGrand and the eventual ending with Steve Reich have to do with Roots music and/or The Fourth of July? I’m not sure either but it sounds pretty good getting from there to here. Pres, Bird and Miles; Politicians moving one foot after the other into their mouths; children’s songs, songs of the road and carnival barkers. Yup, sounds like the Fourth of July to me.

Doc Rock brought in an amazing set of Gospel recordings from the late 1890’s thru the early 1930’s.
Doc Rock sat in in-studio today and, once again, blew our collective minds. An amazing collection(s) of very early gospel, and primarily, sacred music from the late 1890’s thru the early 1930’s.
The material was taken from two collections: Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry 1891 – 1922; and Goodbye Babylon. The first set is a recent Grammy winner which also has a hard cover book that can be gotten separately. The second is a massive 6 CD set that …amounts to the largest, and certainly the most diverse, compilation of American gospel music from the early days of the phonograph record, encompassing both the White and African-American strands of the form.

Ain’t no place like MOTOWN, but Northern England sure sounded close…
The Motown sound makes me think of my early childhood, growing up outside Chicago and discovering radios. There is an optimism in these sounds for a world that could have/should have, but didn’t happen.
We hit some of the hits but featured a lot of previously unreleased material from the literal basement vault of the early studio in Detroit. Stevie Wonder when he was 13, unissued tracks by the likes of The Velvelettes, Temptations, and on and on. Around the same time, across the pond, something similar was going on. Northern Soul and Blue Eyed Soul were driving scooters and parka clad Mods to a frenzy with the likes of Cyril Davis, Chris Farlowe and Chris Clark. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which side of the ocean each recording came from, but in a way, that’s the point.

South African Vaudeville, Jazz, Jive and Rock ‘N’ Roll recordings.

An all to brief listen in to the sounds of South African Jazz, Vaudeville and Rock ‘N’ Roll pioneers. The recordings ranged from 1930 to 1965; from the polished Elite orchestras of the cities clubs to rural village street recordings. Zulu miners phonetically singing in English trying to sound like Elvis (who was trying to sound like a Delta Blues man anyway – weird), tight vocal group harmonies, penny whistles galore, big band latin and ska sounds. An incredible amount of diversity of influences, yet, one can plainly hear the distinct qualities of this region of the world.
An early example of ‘World Beat’ was the first recording heard which included yodeling and Hawaiian steel guitar! We also heard music from some of the later giants of South African music: Hugh Masekala, Miriam Makeba the Mahotella Queens. Too many of these recordings have little to no documentation to them, so we will need to listen.
There is a wonderful book called Marabi Nights: Early South African Jazz and Vaudeville by Christopher Ballantine. It is on Raven Press and came with a cassette with some of the featured music on this show.

Do you wanna’ JUMP children? If the answer is yes, then this was the place to be! 2 hours of honking, pounding, jump blues from 1949 – 1954. Listen in and get a brief listen into and an idea of one of the foundations of where R-N-R came from.
Fast loud horns, pianos pounded so hard it’s a wonder they’ve still got all the keys. Vocals with a fury that couldn’t just be sung, they needed to be shouted! Jump blues came bubbling over the top of the stew pot that was post WWll America. A feeling that everyone wanted everything now and that still wasn’t fast enough.
We heard songs regarding movement, alcohol, cars, money and romance. Come to think about it – what else are pop songs about? Big names and big men like Joe Turner, Illinois Jaquet and Jack McVea graced the stage with lesser knowns like Stomp Gordon, Hal Singer and Jack Cooley.

We got into the swing of things today – the Western Swing of things anyway.
We revisited a style of music that is very upbeat and (seemingly) light in content. This was music made for dancing and having a good time too. Most of these recordings were from the era of the great depression, when life was less than light and people just wanted to forget, at least for a short time, how bad things were. I can’t see anything wrong with that, especially when it swings like this and fiddles sing like that.
The material presented came from several dust kickin’ compilations (Sounding good on the shoulders of someone else’s work). These are:
doughboys, playboys and cowboys (The Golden Years of Western Swing) – a 4 cd set on PROPER.
Hillbilly Bop, Boogie The Honky Tonk Blues V1 1948 – 1950
Hillbilly Bop, Boogie The Honky Tonk Blues V2 1951 – 1953
– both of these are 2 cd sets from the Czech Republic label JASMINE
Hillbilly Bop’N’Boogie: King/Federal’s Roots of Rockabilly 1944 – 56 from ACE Records
and a few other sources…read the playlist to find out more.

On todays show we heard a bunch (30!) tracks taken from 78 RPM records I recently got at a flea market. I went to a flea market recently and found 50 78’s for $35.00 – I turned down the booth owners request for me to buy all 1000 plus though. Everything I played today, except the last two records, I bought at this sale. The music in this show ranged from country fiddling to Hawaiian influenced pap to some really hot jazz to what was supposedly comedy (Rural Monologue with Violin Specialty).
For me the highlight was finding 3 records by the Hoosier Hot Shots. One of the records was more a showcase for the vocalists (and the band making some $$$) but what great fun music. It’s always an interesting process going thru someone else’s collection, and seeing how obsession manifests its ugly head in a garage in rural Minnesota.

Women rock-a-billy singers graced the aural stage this morning.
This genre seems to be one of those that time was trying to bury. We all know of Elvis, Gene, Jerry and that cast of characters with long sideburns and twisting hips. But there was an equally important (and far less supported) group of girls and young women trying to carve out a niche in the conforming 1950’s. Ranging from cute: Shirley Caddell’s Big Bounce, to the terrifying: Susan McCrory The Cannibals’ Rovin’ Gal, to the sultry: Kirby sisters’ Blond In Red Velvet, and of course the weird Juke Box On The Moon by Ginny Millay.
I love this stuff and try and grab onto it whenever I can. Today’s show material was taken from several sources (as most radio shows are). This stuff is worth finding and should be taught in American History classes.

Musical arrangements by Eddie Sauter.

Eddie Sauter was a trumpet player, but most notably an arranger with a unique sense of what a tune should sound like. If modern jazz was moving in this direction (hold one of your arms out) Eddie was moving, with no uncertainty, in the opposite. Interested in every sound and piece, Sauter developed interesting and unique ways of physically locating people in recording sessions (before the days of numerous microphones and multi tracking) to isolate sounds and really bring out harmonics.
On this show we heard work that he did with Mildred Baily Red Norvo (1930’s); Benny Goodman (1940’s – 50’s) and also Stan Getz (1960’s). The album FOCUS by Getz had an amazing web of stings under neath the loosely improvised horn work. Another Getz/Sauter collaboration was the soundtrack to the film ‘Mickey One’. A schitzoid whirl thru the Polish Chicago underground.
A record I’ve been looking for for a very long time was also heard: Inside Sauter-Finegan. A showcase album from the mid 1950’s featuring the work of two arrangers going crazy impressing themselves (Bill Finegan was an arranger for Glenn Miller).

Top-Shelf records

Records that were in a dusty box on the top of a record shelf, in KFAI’s music library.

Thanks to Liz Olds for filling this day with music.

Dick Himes came in and rustled up 34 (!?!) Western Swing tunes on this day. More songs than is humanly possible to squeeze into a two hour show, but he did it.
This was a great mix of some of the big names in the biz: Wills, Cooley various stripes of Doughboys. Not leaving behind some of the smaller, but still vibrant groups of the time: the Washboard Wonders, Smoky Wood The Wood Chips and the Port Arthur Jubileers.
He also got in there a song I really like about branding, and I’m not talking about corporate identity here, I’m talking about the Sons of the Pioneers – Hold That Critter Down.

Minnesota no Tamago-Uri and the Shamissen Boogie – Pre and post WW 2 Japanese Pop 78 RPM records.

A good idea is worth ripping off, er, researching further. Radio Rumpus Room had their All-Japanese Sukiyaki Stomp (which you all should listen to on our archive while you have the chance). So, on Tuesday December 4th we presented 2 hours of songs and music from pre and post WW 2 Japanese Pop 78 RPM records. This is the sort of stuff that should be listened to in history class. The delightful and sad; boogies and rhumbas, and a visit from the Minnesota Egg Salesman. Click on the image to your right if you think I’m kidding.
These records, collectively, are one of my prized obsessions and we listened to less than 1/2 of them today. Most of these records have little or no English on the labels, so the following playlist will be sketchy/scratchy in places. A.U. stands for artist unknown. U.T. stands for unknown title.

Holidaze are upon us once more. Some nice and some thought provoking music on this day. The show had more of a winter feel than holiday: cold and bright, dreary and muted yet with some brightness and humor to round it all out. Piano great, and giant of a man Oscar Peterson passed away this week. The show started (and ended) with a nice jazz set that included Blossom Dearie’s Figure 8 song from the TV series Multiplication Rock. There were tunes from the land of 1960’s TV, Gregorian England, contemporary classics and, as always, a few surprises thrown in and around.
