Turkish, Serbian and Croation tunes brought to us by the Pepper Patriot

My guest, the Pepper Patriot, returned on this day to bring in more amazing and haunted sounds from Turkey, Serbia and Croatia. We hope that you enjoy this extra slice of ancient and contemporary tunes from one of civilazations cradles. “I was telling you about some 78′s I had collected in Istanbul: Halk Turkusu, or what I like to call Turkish blues; Sanat, or Turkish classical music done by Zeki Muren (the Turkish Liberace); Bengali film music featuring some amazing steel guitar; Moldovan and Georgian tunes on CCCP state sponsored folk records..”

Between the radio show broadcast and now, while on a more recent trip abroad, Pepper Patriot’s diverse, thoughtful and weird collection of music and so much more, disappeared. Probably stolen but who knows really. Enjoy this glimpse into the growing list of gone worlds.

Newton’s Crumb

Recorded in September of 2007, this show featured local accordionist, band leader and song collector Dan Newton. Dan brought in music by, compiled by or illustrated by Robert Crumb. From Crumb’s 1970’s band The Cheap Suit Serenaders’ to the actual 78 RPM recordings that inspired them. We heard some wonderfully delightful music. As a special treat, Dan also brought in a series of cassette tapes, with the hand written J-Cards, sent to Dan by Crumb. The tapes Dan brought in had great names:

Putting The Cheap Suits To Shame
Shake Your Dogs
Steppin’ Out

Upper Midwest Polka 1940’s – 1970’s

Upper Midwestern polka bands from the 1940’s – 1970’s. Good time music from the heartland. This is a small portion from a collection of regional polka 78’s and LP’s. A few years before this program aired, 05-05-2009, a listener to the radio show called to tell me of a record collection he had seen on this new weird web site called Craig’s List (registered trademark). All of the music here is a small portion from that collection of 40+ 78 RPM’s and as many LP’s.

North of White Bear Lake, 30 years in the collecting and making, we heard music from such push button hot spots as New Ulm, New Prague, St. Cloud, Hastings, Duluth and the Twin Cities themselves. Wisconsin and the Dakotas show up to keep things friendly. The phone really did ring off the hook during this program – it hit a regional nerve. The 2 exceptions in this mix, that came from outside the collection, were Minneapolis band The Wallets with their freak-out breakdown Gonznoi Polka from 1983, and the show ends with one of the funniest mash-ups I know of: Scottish accordionist Sir Jimmy Shand teamed up with rapper 50 Cent.

Turkish 78 RPMs / Bengali film tunes and the Turkish Liberace

78 RPM records, LPs, and a few cassettes from Istanbul. This radio show is from April 7, 2009 and features Minneapolis based 78 RPM DJ and music fan Pepper Patriot, who brought in some audio treasures from his travels to Turkey and the Balkans. PP said at the time “I was telling you about some 78’s I had collected in Istanbul: Halk Turkusu, or what I like to call Turkish blues; Sanat, or Turkish classical music done by Zeki Muren (the Turkish Liberace); Bengali film music featuring some amazing steel guitar; Moldovan and Georgian tunes on CCCP state sponsored folk records..”

Early Black American recordings

Doc Rock was in-studio for this show and, once again, blew our collective minds with an amazing show of very early gospel, minstrel, sacred and show music from the late 1890’s thru the early 1930’s. Doc’s knowledge and unique interpretation of music shines in this show from 2007. You will hear haunted and beautiful voices through hundred year old static / some of the earliest recorded examples of songs later made popular by the 60’s Folk and Rock scenes / Rock and Doo Wop styles decades before those terms existed.

The material presented was taken from two available collections. Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry 1891 – 1922 on Archeophone and Goodbye Babylon on Dust-to-digital. The first set was a Grammy winner. There is also a hard cover book with the same name. The second is a massive 6 CD set that is the largest, inclusive and most diverse compilation of American gospel music from the early days of recording.

80 Brazilian 78’s! How many zeros is that?

One time in the record store, Scott came up to me like a dealer in an overcoat and whispered, “Hey Bub, have I got a deal for you.” He had gotten a collection from a collector, and within it there were four boxes of records from Brazil. The short version is I got them. Inside were about 80 unique records, different labels and most in the original paper sleeves. There were also Ten, 10 inch 33 1/3 RPM LP’s with incredible art work on the covers.

Here is a link to a radio show from 2009 that featured these Ten, 10 inchers.

The music ranges from carnival sambas to forro to vocal trios to stuff that would have been heard in the best elevators or dentist offices in Rio. There was another surprise, a small rattling noise from one of the boxes.

In the bottom of a smoked-Gray cordial glass sit a small pile of stones and shells.
These shells and stones were within the creases of a box of 78 RPM records from Brazil.
I like to think that someone played these records on a beach, before I was born
and that these stones and shells have been waiting
like the music on these records
to be out again.

Who’s your DADA

nipped1

On October 5, 2004, Dig Up The Roots featured a program of DADA, Futurist, and Surrealist recordings from Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, and many others.. Love them or hate them, these artistic mavericks and malcontents of the early Twentieth century blew apart the traditional worlds of artist and audience, creating a foundation for generations of freaks and weirdos who followed to destroy rational thought in their own ways. It may be a stretch to call some of these recordings music… but that’s why radio dials spin. Interviews, Noise machines AKA Intonomuri , Sound poetry and word bending, dissonant neo classical music. This was a very enjoyable show to do and stretched the definitions of Roots music.

Happy Pancake Day – Old New Orleans

Happy Pancake Day! Some people refer to this day as Mardi Gras.

This radio show was broadcast on 02/05/2008 and is 2 hours of tunes from, about and in some way relevant to New Orleans. We heard Jelly Roll Morton talk about Mardi Gras and Indian songs he remembered from his childhood. Primordial jazz from the likes of Sam Morgan, Louis DuMaine and the Humphrey Brothers (Willie and Percy) blowin’ down Jerico with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

The Ancient Mix Master showed up with a few 78’s. A great set on Capitol called The History of Jazz Vol 1: The Solid South. We also heard Mississippi: A Journey in Tones (Mississippi Suite), for orchestra by Ferde Grofé. This version conducted by André Kostelanetz. I played it out of sequence so we started in New Orleans and ended in Minnesota, the land of sky blue water.

The show ended with another aspect of mardi gras: hooch, hoodoo and hopheads.

South African Vaudeville, Jazz, Jive and Rock ‘N’ Roll

7/24/2007 Dig Up The Roots

An all to brief listen in to the sounds of South African Jazz, Vaudeville and Rock ‘N’ Roll pioneers. The recordings ranged from 1930 to 1965; from the polished Elite orchestras of the cities clubs to rural village street recordings. Zulu miners phonetically singing in English trying to sound like Elvis (who was trying to sound like a Delta Blues man anyway – weird), tight vocal group harmonies, penny whistles galore, big band Latin and ska sounds. An incredible amount of diversity of influences, yet, one can plainly hear the distinct qualities of this region of the world.

An early example of ‘World Beat’ was the first recording heard which included yodeling and Hawaiian steel guitar! We also heard music from some of the later giants of South African music: Hugh Masekala, Miriam Makeba the Mahotella Queens. Many of these recordings have little to no documentation so we will need to listen.

There is a wonderful book called Marabi Nights: Early South African Jazz and Vaudeville by Christopher Ballantine. It is on Raven Press and came with a cassette with some of the featured music on this show.
